Typescripts and some originals of letters written by Henry B. Scott home to his mother Sarah T.C. Scott and his sister Mary "Lizzie" (Scott) Gordon (Mrs. George H.) during the Civil War. His letters describe camp life and service in Virginia with the 2nd Regiment Mass. Volunteer Infantry (through June 1862), including the Battle of Winchester (May 1862); as Assistant Adjutant General of the U.S. Volunteers on the staff of his brother-in-law General Gordon (through Mar. 1865), including action at Cedar Mountain (Aug. 1862) and Chancellorsville (May 1863) where he was wounded and during the occupation of New Orleans in 1864; and briefly as commander of the 4th Regiment Mass. Volunteer Cavalry. The letters describe the activities of General Gordon as well as within the upper ranks of the U.S. Volunteers, including one letter each to Gordon and U.S. Grant. The collection also includes an incomplete undated mss. (p.89-266) of Scott's reminiscences of the war.
